The city that breathes music is a great place for family fun
Vienna is simply beautiful, the capital of Austria will undoubtedly surprise you and you'll find that its musical, artistic and intellectual atmosphere also suits a fun family trip! Vienna with children is fun for the whole family and a great way to introduce Mozart and Beethoven to your child.
House of Music (Haus der Musik)
How can you not start with music in a city that breathes this art? The Casa da Música is the perfect place to introduce children to music. Right at the entrance you'll find a completely musical staircase, where each step makes a sound. We had a lot of fun until we reached the rooms that feature the most famous classical composers: Beethoven, Mozart and many others who have made history in our humanity.
Can you imagine becoming a real conductor? If you can't conduct an orchestra, the musicians will complain and everything! The House of Music is totally interactive and incredible, and is sure to keep kids' attention.
Everything is learning
It's easy to teach the little ones about sound and vibration. In one of the rooms they can see how sound vibrates and the little balls bounce on different types of sound. Acoustic rooms are also present to make it easier for the little ones to understand this subject. There's also a space where you can hear all the noises the body makes, or feel like you're in the noisiest capital cities in the world.
The House of Music and Sound is also ideal for music lovers. We listened to great music and learned a lot about the most famous composers, and I got so carried away that I even danced a waltz with Igor. The House of Music is undoubtedly an excellent place to visit in Vienna with children.
Zoom Kindermuseum
Zoom is a museum for children where they can let their imagination run wild and where I had an incredible time interacting with them. Children up to 6 years old have a special room where they can only have one companion. We played, went down a slide, pretended to be a pirate and even became a wild animal!
It's a space where we give ourselves completely to the little ones. You can't take cell phones or photos inside, so take the opportunity to play a lot and build unforgettable moments together.
Calm down! The Zoom Kindermuseum is not just for small children, it's suitable for anyone going to Vienna with children up to the age of 14. However, the rooms are separate, making it more fun for all the little ones, or not so little ones.
Restaurant options nearby:
Glacis Beisl → It's right next to Zoom and has delicious schnitzel! Perfect for children. Emmanuel ate this delicacy almost every day.
The schnitzel is a well-seasoned and tasty breaded steak, all of which I've tried so far were very crispy.
Schönbrunn Palace
Schönbrunn Palace, known as Vienna's Palace of Versailles or as Sissi's Palace, is one of Austria's main historical and cultural monuments.
Its gardens are extremely beautiful and there are plenty of activities to do with the family! Set aside a whole day to enjoy this beautiful palace and its activities.
Restaurant options nearby:
Café Residenz Schönbrunn → Located on the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace, we each tried a different dish, all of which were very tasty! I suggest trying the apple pie, one of the house specialties.
Children's Museum (Kindermuseum Schönbrunn)
The children's museum is located in one of the wings of Schönbrunn Palace and is simply incredible for teaching about the Austrian empire or simply going back in time and immersing yourself in history.
As soon as we entered we could dress up like real emperors, Emmanuel loved pretending to be a prince.
Then there are the slides and many educational rooms that show how life used to be. It's simply sensational and completely instructive, making it one of the must-see places on your visit to Vienna with children.
Zoo (Tiergarten Schönbrunn)
The zoo is on the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace and is known as the oldest working zoo in the world. It was founded in 1752 as an imperial zoo and to this day retains some baroque architecture.
It was the first zoo we visited in the snow, and we saw the care that must be taken with some species, many of which live in huge heated rooms. Another highlight was the spaces without bars, where there were only natural limitations.
Marionette Theater at the Palace of Schönbrunn
Also on the Schönbrunn Palace, the puppet theater was the place where our little one had the most fun and really immersed himself in Mozart's music and charms! It was with the performance of Mozart's Magic Flute that our little one fell in love with Papageno!
After this visit, everything sounded like classical music and every stick turned into a violin, which was great for preparing him to attend a real opera and really enjoy classical music.
At the puppet theater, as well as watching a beautiful and magical play, you can understand how puppets are made and see an infinite number of puppets. It's an incredible attraction to do in Vienna with children.
Museum of Illusions
At the Museum of Illusions, everyone becomes a child, or even the main course, laughs.
Imagination is the limit and often our eyes deceive us, can our little ones really be bigger than us? Set aside at least two hours to have lots of fun as a family and multiply the possibilities. Rest assured that not everything you see is real there.
Prater Amusement park
It's the oldest operating amusement park in the world! It's also home to the oldest working Ferris wheel in the world.
The Prater has seen a lot of history on its grounds, and before it became an amusement park, it was a royal hunting garden, imagine how many things have passed through there?
It's definitely a place to visit if you're going to Vienna with children or not, as there are attractions for all tastes all year round! It's worth remembering that in winter, almost all the rides are closed, but it's worth visiting the Prater to ride its majestic Ferris wheel and visit one of its restaurants, or even take a flight!
Wiener Riesenrad - Vienna Ferris Wheel
The Prater is home to the world's oldest Ferris wheel, with its huge wagons! The Ferris wheel was built in 1897, but in 1944 it suffered from the Second World War and to this day you can see wagons missing, not because of lack of maintenance but because of the memory of history. Before you get on the Ferris wheel, there's a small museum where all this history is told, including the wartime history.
The Ferris wheel ride should be done even by those who are afraid of heights, like me, laughs. I felt completely safe, there was no swaying and I could see the city from a privileged view, it's extremely beautiful! The wagons are spacious and there are a few different models, and you can even have dinner or a mini party in some of them.
Windobona Skydiving indoor
That's right, the Prater is home to the indoor skydiving attraction Windobona Wien, where you can fly like Peter Pan. We went and repeated this wonderful experience the next day.
The sensation of flying is incredible and wonderful, we wanted to do it again every day and it became one of our favorite attractions! What child or adult doesn't want to fly for real? It's possible! But I'll tell you, it can be a bit difficult at first, but nothing you can't learn quickly and get hooked on!
ROLLERCOASTER Restaurant
Prata is also home to the impressive rollercoaster restaurant! The ROLLERCOASTER Restaurant is sensational and impressive!!! It's like stepping into the future, where machines prepare your order and deliver it in mini rollercoaster carts. It's sensational for any child or adult, where the colored lights dance along with the machines that do all the work.
Calm down, there's still a waiter, hot food or drinks don't go down the food rollercoaster for safety reasons.
Café-Restaurant-Biergarten Luftburg
It's a restaurant where you can eat and leave VERY satisfied. We ordered the pork knee, another marvel of local cuisine. It was very juicy and crunchy, well worth it. Also try the local juice "Pago", it tastes different and refreshing.
Carriage ride through Vienna
If you're going to Vienna in winter, the carriage ride has to be on your itinerary! The snow falling while you see the city from another angle is incredible! There you can enter the magical world of a fairy tale.
I kept imagining how princesses and queens used to walk around Vienna in the old days, and during the tour we passed the palace and other important points in the city. Blankets are provided in the carriages. It was a great option for a warm city tour without getting tired.
Where to stay in Vienna with children - Boutique Hotel Stadthalle
It's a hotel with a wonderful philosophy, it's totally sustainable, with green walls and a beautiful garden.
Each room has a unique decoration of the utmost taste. We stayed in the family room, I loved the sheep theme and Emmanuel was able to sleep comfortably in the crib they had placed in the living room next to the room, where there is also a sofa that turns into a bed for older children.
It's great for families traveling to Vienna, as parents can have complete privacy in their accommodation.
Another point that caught my eye was the material used in the decoration, such as the chandelier made from recycled glass bottles.
The breakfast has a special flavor, since it's all organic and when you try any of the products you can immediately feel the difference from the industrialized ones, I suggest trying the apple juice!
More restaurants in Vienna
Bitzinger Wurstelstand Albertina
The Bitzinger Würstelstand Albertina is a square kiosk where you order your sausage at a counter and eat it standing up, like a street stall!!! But it's so worth it.
It's impossible to talk about travel without talking about food! Vienna is known for its schnitzel, but sausages are also a highlight and at Albertina Platz you will eat the best sausage of your life! At Bitzinger there are a few sausage options, but my favorite was the one with cheese! It's juicy and wonderful.
Vienna's central café
It's one of Vienna's oldest and most traditional cafés, with wonderful pastries! It's worth a break to see all the architecture and coziness, especially on cold days.
Of course, all our sweets came with hot chocolate or cappuccino.
Plachuttas Gasthaus Zur Oper
If you want to immerse yourself in the local cuisine, go to this restaurant! I was delighted with the dishes, this time I asked what the traditional dish was other than schnitzel and I didn't regret it.
There was a little soup as a starter and then a wonderful dish full of things I love! Meat, creamed spinach and much more, the best dish I've tried all trip.
The sweets aren't far behind either.
Vienna with children
Vienna breathes music, culture and romance, it was a destination that surprised us positively! All the activities we took part in had something geared towards children, it was great to be able to enjoy everything with the little one and we had a lot of fun together.
The synergy that Vienna has with children is sensational and the care taken to introduce the little ones to the world of classical music is wonderful! It was a trip that changed and added a lot to Emmanuel, and where he learned to love classical music.
